What to do in West Columbia

The City of West Columbia, Texas is a small city southwest of Houston in western Brazoria County. It has a population of 3,633 as of the 2020 census. Despite its small size today, Columbia was the capital of Texas for four months in 1836. The first Congress voted to move the capitol to Houston because Columbia didn’t have sufficient housing for government representatives. Stephen F. Austin died in Columbia.

There was a discovery of oil in 1918, which brought commerce to the area. However, the population remains small. There is a Veterans War Memorial at the American Legion, not far from the municipal courthouse.
